Eat less, have more immune cells

Magazine issue 2581

WHEN it comes to food, moderation may be the best strategy. Calorie-restricted diets have long been thought to extend lifespan, but no one could find a reason why. Now Janko Nikolich-Zugich of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland and his colleagues have discovered that the immune systems of older primates on a restricted diet are "younger" and function better than those of their peers on a normal diet.

My advice is to stop eating so many Oreos, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Lays potato chips, Cakes, Donuts, Candies, Cookies, sodas and any foods, snacks or drinks that contain no nutritional value whatsoever.

Unless of course, you plan on a future career as a Krispy Kreme Calendar model.

Hi,

Something interesting I discovered on my personal quest for finding optimal health, nomatter what age and fits with this topic...

When I eat no dinner (and not try to compensate in calories on breakfast and lunch!) I sleep one hour less! Over and over again, the same result. Just 2 nights I had hunger in bed, after that, skipping dinner was no problem anymore. And now I have one valuable hour more awake..

Hi Redniut, I noticed that back in the 90s, when I had reached my 30s that always after a filling meal, whether lunch or dinner (I seldom eat breakfast), that I required a short nap.

It seems that my body needs to rest while I digest the food.

I think that several small meals throughout the day are the best way to eat.

Hi Mark,

You're right. So it actually seems silly to eat dinner, or anyway, to consume so much food at a time when you are planning to relax and prepare for the night.

Usually a small snack with some protein and carbs should be enough for dinner (like a glass of milk). I guess that is not the menu of the "lovely" ladies above LOL!
