10 years ago, when I was an AOL member there was very little protection for its members.

Trojan Virus's would fill up your mail box and steal your account information if you downloaded Anna Kournikova naked.

Today AOL and other giants like Microsoft seem to try and provide their users with better safeguards againts virii, spyware etc.

BUT... you will still be slammed with email spam.

* Penis enlargement spam

* You Won the Lottery spam

* Can I send you 20 million dollars from Nigeria spam

* You need to verify your Pay Pal acct

* You need to verify your Bank of America or your Wells Fargo account

and soooo much more.

My rant is this....

Some time ago, Hotmail upgraded their free email service, of which I have been a user of for 6 years. A new junk mail folder was added, Automatic virus scans from Trend Micro was added, my storage was increased and there was a button to easily BLOCK emails from the scum who fill our boxes up with crap.

BUT.... One day, the button to BLOCK emails disappeared.

Today, it is impossible to BLOCK multiple emails.

So the scum keep sending their crap.

My conclusion is that Microsoft is in cahoots with the email spammers.

As far as AOL, I wouldn't use them again if you paid me.

The biggest reason I left AOL was this...

When I would type, it would take 5 seconds or more for each letter to appear on my screen. I was like in sloooow motion.

I KNEW someone was in my computer.

(Visiting PuPPs Fan, you are having this happen to you according to a recent post from you. -- you NEED a firewall!!!)

Had I been on some super fast up to date PC with a cable connection or DSL I might not have noticed it.

During my time on AOL, I went thru no less than 5 hard drives and lost all of my contacts and all of my files and images several times.

I concluded that AOL was NOT safe for me or my pc.

Thanks for the tip Mr PuPP. hugs.gif

This computer I'm on is old and 2nd or 3rd hand (don't know how many people its been through really). It has a firewall on it from previous users but its probably not a very good one. Also I get regular AGV and VET updates and I saw the word firewall in there somewhere. I only have 7 watsits of hard drive on this old thing and I only really use it for internet research and typing documents.

I don't have any business software running and I never use internet banking or make internet purchases and I don't have or want a credit card and hotmail is supposed to have all its own protective stuff, so I figured that when its time to get a new computer I'll have proper protective software on the new one (but I still won't do any internet banking or own a credit card). Actually I have noticed that junk emails and scam emails in hotmail tend to arrive following contact from certain addresses not at the time considered junk. I don't have contact with a whole lot of people so I can monitor the pattern VERY easily. bad bad bad... angryNEW.gif

If anyone is digging up information on my computer all they will find is emails of no consequence, my posts here on your forum and word documents that don't make at all pleasant reading. I have had to wipe the hard drive a few times so there really is only recent stuff on the pc at any time anyway.

I'll get up to speed on the security stuff when I have something to protect winkNEW.gif , a new machine.

Your helpful tips are very much appreciated Mr PuPP because I'm still learning and when I get off this 'L-plate' machine and onto a 'P-plate' machine I'll need to be familiar with all the protective measures, so thank you for telling us about it!!!
