QUOTE (uggliozzi @ Mar 19 2008, 08:06 PM)

I picked mine up in India in the 60's. Despite years of use and abuse the blades and handles are still in excellent condition but the leather of the scabbards fell apart long ago. I would recommend replacing the leather on the scabbards with a man-made cloth so that it will not rot in the field.

l have something like that planned.

l have a special custom ordered khukri coming from Himalayan lmports (BirGorkha, Nepal) l specified from my 20+ years of owning and using khukris extensively out here in the woods.

lt is something l dreamed up to be:

#1 - long enough and light enough to be an effective short sword

#2 - short enough (yet still stout enough) to be an effective tool

lt's important for it to be both in a true end-of-modern-civilization situation.

What l chose as the basis for this design is the chitlangi khukri because although it is in the sirupati class (narrow blade), the blade is a little broader, although not as broad as the blade of a budhone class (wide blade) khukri. lt's a good compromise between the two.

Well, back to topic... l'm going to make a special sarki (scabbard) for it which will be just like you suggested: hand carved from wood with a fabric covering. l'm designing a special frog for it to hold it on my belt at an angle (like a sword) and the sarki will have two pouches; one for a Leatherman SuperTool and one for a small butcher's steel for maintaining the edge. l'll be using some suitably heavy military camo or OD green fabric for the covering and probably some stitched thick leather for protecting the tip.

HI ALL
I been Cutting things again? I has??

I have cut one off the larger bottles down. To allow the use, of less wood they proved to be, to big. The top section sits on a rest and is slightly forward to allow air flow: works a treat.

This is the bottom of the bottle with a circular barbeque plate on it, with the cut out middle section being used as a wind barrier , Sookie n Bud approve they at every thing I was allowed the Grilled spuds n Yarrow.
There is also an X shaped slot in the bottom of the fire part to allow updraft that works well too

These are my first knife blanks that if i do not screw uo will become one mini heavy small blade type sticker n a small utility knife. I was picking up the off cuts when the thought occurred that this small piece would make a good utility type knife

I had a larger piece off the same material but it ended up in the wood heater I cut a couple of blanks out for the big curved style blades but on inspection considered them to thin,
