Aid for Myanamar
Where do we go from here ?

By Nodstar
from the Casa Del Nod
Saturday 10 May 2008

Today it will be seven days since Tropical Cyclone Nargis
carved it's way across the Irrawaddy Delta in Burma.

Close inspection of news articles reveals some telling details
as to why the Military Junta has refused entry visas to the
gathering of world aid agencies waiting in Thailand to deliver
desperately needed medical help, water, food, and shelter.

Today marks the beginning of what the Junta calls elections.

The outcome of which will further cement the power and grip
of the military on the lives of people who are told to do their
"patriotic duty " and vote or suffer the consequences of being
imprisoned as "political dissidents".

There has been speculation in political circles that the lack of
visibility of the military during the last week, points to possible
breakdown in command and most importantly, lack of unity
in the face of worldwide scrutiny.

One things seems very clear, the Junta wish to be given the international aid
and sell it back to the populace under the guise of "domestic management"

Yesterday the head of the UN, Mr Ban Ki Moon attempted to contact
the Junta's leader Tan Shwe .
Presumably to inform him of the UN resolution which has received pledges
of 187 million dollars for disaster relief.

Seven days have passed since the disaster.
The monsoon season is beginning.
Phone calls, and reprimands are ineffectual.
An estimated 1.5 million human beings are desperately
in need of humanitarian aid.

What transpires over the next few days could change the
way the world views it's self in terms of our ability to really
make a difference to the suffering of our fellow world citizens.

Time to stand up for the sovereign rights of humanity, and ignore
the shrill claims of the Myanmar Junta's threats of retaliation
should the world community ignore them and enter their country
on humanitarian grounds, if the government continue to
deny their citizens the help that they deserve.

The UN has a duty of care, we as human beings have a duty of care.

Lets not let the evils of politics prevent that .

STAND UP FOR LOVE
STAND UP FOR COMPASSION
STAND UP FOR RIGHT ACTION

For those that take a stand ..

"May the road rise up to meet you and the wind be at your back"

Best Wishes

Hi noddy --- soon after I heard about the cyclone that devastated Myanmar, I heard that my US govt was offering $250,000 in aid.

My jaw dropped. EmoticonJawDropper.gif

Even a blind man can see that some people's lives have more value than others in our worlds leaders eyes.

Would be a different story if Myanmar had oil reserves.

If Myanmar had big oil the west's intelligence agenices would find that they also had weapons of mass destruction, was a threat to the "interests" of the west and a member of the "axis of evil". The west would therefore have no choice but to invade and liberate the oil er sorry, I mean people.

Seeing as how Myanmar has nothing of value to the west, the incompetent, ruthless, cowardly junta will continue unimpeded like the regimes in Dafur and Zimbabwe.

I suppose it is one way of population control.

Hiya UGGIE ...

Thanks for taking the time to read my article ..

My not so humble opinion about the events transpiring in Burma.

The UN has failed to deliver the humanitarian aid it promised .

In fact the UN has failed so miserably in this instance, that a review should be undertaken
in regards to future "promises" of help to those in disaster zones.

Mr Ban Ki Moon ( current head of the UN ) should address his failure or resign .

That diplomatic efforts failed re immediate food, water, shelter and medical relief teams,
due to the "politically correct'' inertia approach has led to a triumph of sorts for the ruling Junta.

A handful of senile, backward, totaliltarian,Generals have successfully reduced a population
to hunger starvation and homelessnes, almost 2 million people at last estimate.

As an act of collective cowardice on behalf of the UN and the western 1st world nations
this surely qualifies as a crime against humanity.

It measures up with the genocidal activities of Pol Pot and Stalin to name just a few of
the big names in the genocide game.

Shame on them !!!!

The UN's hands are tied with regard to helping people whose rulers do not want them helped. Why is this? Why are helpless people sacrificed because the UN cannot get approval to force a ruling junta to accept aid?

The approval needs to come from other countries, especially the security council. If a country was to agree to approve an "aid invasion" then that country would have no moral right to deny an "aid invasion" on its own soil.

So we won't get a decent UN response because too many countries would rather innocent people die in despair and degredation than create a precedent for forced aid just in case it bites them when capitalism forces them to use denial of aid for its own purposes.

The Burmese junta will get away with its genocide because communication from the outside to the Burmese people is practically non-existent. Short wave services, which used to provide much needed information to shut-off peoples, are being wound down all over the world in favour of the internet. A family living in a woven hut in back of beyond Asia does not have access to the internet but they do have access to battery-powered short-wave receivers. While no alternative information is getting to the Burmese people they will have no choice but to believe the lies from their rulers and the possibility for reform is non-existent.

Some people will say that short-wave radio is ineffectual. Well if it is ineffectual why do some rulers, whose people are still receiving alternate information, try so hard to jam those services they don't like?
