Earthquake jolts Sulawesi
From correspondents in Jakarta
February 19, 2005

AN earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Saturday, causing the tide to rise and sparking fears of another tsunami.

The undersea quake occurred at 8:04 am (1104 AEDT) with the epicentre 224km south of Kendari, the capital of Southeast Sulawesi province, Sutiono of the National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

"There was a report of the quake causing the tide to rise between three and four metres but we haven't received information if there was any damage or casualties," Sutiono said.

"People feared a tsunami."

Elshinta radio said the walls of a government building were cracked by the quake.

Hundreds Dead After Strong Earthquake Hits Iran
By Raheb Homavandi
Reuters
February 22, 2005

ZARAND, Iran - A powerful earthquake hit a mountainous region of southeast Iran Tuesday, killing almost 400 people, injuring hundreds and destroying villages, officials said.

The tremor, with a magnitude of 6.4, was centered on the town of Zarand, about 440 miles southeast of Tehran and just 160 miles from Bam, devastated by an earthquake that killed 31,000 people just over a year ago.

Distraught and weeping villagers carried dead bodies wrapped in bloodied blankets and bed sheets and scrabbled with their bare hands through rubble in search of friends and relatives. [...]

"The toll now stands at 377 dead and more than 1,000 injured," Ali Komsari, a spokesman for the Kerman provincial governor's office, told Reuters. [...]

Mild quake sows panic in Indonesia's Sulawesi island
21 February 2005 1820 hrs

JAKARTA : An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook the tremor-prone Indonesian town of Palu on the island of Sulawesi Monday, causing panic but no reported casualties or damage, an official said.

Residents fled their homes when the tremor struck, fearing a repeat of the December tsunami that devastated western Indonesia's Sumatra, police in the town told AFP.

The land quake -- the second relatively strong tremor to hit Palu since January -- was centered 49 kilometers (30 miles) south of the city and struck at 11:00 am (0400 GMT) Monday, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics office in Jakarta said.

Monday's tremor is the latest jolt to hit Sulawesi after a 6.9 Richter scale tremor on Saturday raised sea levels and spread panic among thousands of residents in three towns on the island. [...]

Hi everyone, greetings from oz!!!
Just heard on the local news channel that theres been a report of an earthquake centered 140 KMS off the coast of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Located in the Banda sea off East Timor a couple of hours ago.

There seems to be some disagreement about the intensity though, 6.8 on some channels, 7.5 on others!!!!!

One killed, 400 injured in Japan quake
AFP
Sun Mar 20, 4:02 AM ET

TOKYO - A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale rocked the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, killing at least one person and injuring more than 400 others.

The quake, which occurred Sunday at 10:53 am (0153 GMT), also collapsed houses and roads, caused landslides and disrupted land and air traffic.

The Meteorological Agency immediately issued tsunami warnings but lifted them one hour later after detecting no significant rise in the tide.

"The fault was caused by the crust's horizontal shift. If the fault was vertical, it would have triggered tsunamis," said Toshikazu Hirai, a seismic expert at the government agency. [...]

A spokesman for the Fukuoka prefectural police headquarters said 510 houses had been destroyed or partially damaged and roads were cracked at 62 spots. There were also nine landslides. [...]

The meteorological agency detected more than 74 aftershocks within seven hours of the quake, whose was located in waters some 20 kilometers (13 miles) Fukuoka. Its focus was only nine kilometers (six miles) below surface. [...]

The tremor was also felt in the south of the Korean peninsula. [...]

It was the biggest earthquake to hit Japan since a magnitude-6.8 quake rattled the Niigata region, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Tokyo on October 23, leaving 40 people dead.

The Niigata disaster was the deadliest in quake-prone Japan since January 17, 1995, when 6,433 people died after a pre-dawn tremor in the western port city of Kobe.

It's just 11 days since The Guardian had this article:

QUOTE
New tsunami fear as scientists find dangerous stresses on ocean floor
http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/st...1439372,00.html

Second major earthquake could strike Indian Ocean within a year
David Adam, science correspondent
Thursday March 17, 2005
The Guardian

Scientists analysing the aftermath of the Boxing Day earthquake under the Indian Ocean warned today that another devastating quake is now far more likely to strike the region.
The seismic slip off the coast of Sumatra that triggered the tsunami has piled dangerous levels of stress on to two vulnerable parts of the fault zone, significantly raising the chances of a magnitude 7.5 earthquake. The scientists cannot accurately predict how soon such an earthquake may occur, but they point out that previous examples of so-called "coupled" earthquakes have struck within a year of each other.
