Scientists discover new type of volcano

German scientists have discovered a new kind of volcano that contains asphalt instead of lava.

Gerhard Bohrmann of the Research Centre for Oceanic Borders in Bremen says the volcanoes were found underwater in the Mexican gulf.

The are between 450 and 800 metres high and have a variety of animals and bacteria living on them.

Asphalt can be created if special micro-organisms feed on crude oil under water.

But while small amounts of asphalt have sometimes been found under water, nothing coming close to the volcanos had been known to exist until now.

Bohrman says asphalt is generally considered too hostile an environment for life to develop on it.

"Despite that, we have found an entire ecosystem not just living on asphalt but actually feeding off it."

Scientists now believe this kind of volcano can only be found in these particular conditions.

They include water that is up to 3000 metres deep, as well as salt and crude oil deposits in the ground.

The scientists had originally set out in search of deep sea methane.

Instead, they discovered a new type of volcano, and found that more than one square kilometre of sea ground in the gulf is covered entirely in asphalt.

Animal zoo supervisors are reporting from various part of the world that animals are behaving strangely all around the world for the last few months.

In Sri Lanka where more than 14,000 people have died and the animal zoo had a direct hit from the Tsunami, not a single animal has died or is injured. They all ran to higher ground before the Tsunami came. Tsunamis have electromagnetic waves associated that the animals can sense. That may have saved them.

Volcano spews lava on India´s Andamans

PORT BLAIR, India (AFP) Dec 30, 2004

Lava is spewing from a crater on India´s Andaman islands in the aftermath of the huge earthquake that set off tsunamis killing thousands of people, police chief Samsher Deol told AFP on Thursday.

People have been evacuated from the area around the crater near Baratang town on Middle Strait island, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the capital Port Blair.

There were no reports of injury.

"It began on Tuesday night. Flames and lava are shooting up three metres high," Deol said.

"We cleared the population from a half kilometre range as a precaution ... and put up barricades."

Some 2,000 people live at Baratang.

"A crack opened in the earth´s crust there about a decade ago," Deol said. "It developed into a crater which used to give off gas."

The Geological Survey of India describes the Baratang crater as a mud volcano covering an area of about 1,200 square metres (1,440 yards), which has been increasing in size from a minor fissure.

Official sources earlier mistakenly sited the volcano on Barren Island, site of a crater traditionally known as the only active volcano in India.

Barren 1 is located some 135 kilometres (80 miles) northeast of the capital Port Blair, and last erupted in 1996.

The Andamans has reported a series of major aftershocks daily since Sunday´s massive undersea quake off Sumatra.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located near a zone of intense tectonic activity.

Barren Island also erupted in 1991 after more than a century of inactivity.

Volcano Erupts in Earthquake Area
31-Dec-2004

India's only active volcano, known as Barren-1, which is located in the Andaman Islands chain about 80 miles northeast of the capital, Port Blair, has begun erupting in the aftermath of last Sunday's mega-quake.

Lava is flowing down the sides of the volcano, and lava and steam are being emitted from the crater. While the volcano is not a threat to populated areas, its sudden eruption following the earthquake is another sign of just how profoundly the massive quake affected the region geologically.

Sumatra, as close to the quake's epicenter as Barren-1, has 35 active volcanoes, and the question of whether or not they will be affected by the earth movement is at present unanswered.

A second volcano in the Andaman chain, Narcondam, is located near Barren-1. It has not erupted since 1991.

Area scientists are attempting to keep an eye on all volcanoes in the region, but with communications severely disrupted due to the quake and tsunami, few volcanoes are being actively monitored.

The second volcano(Narcondum) in the Andaman Islands started erupting today. There have been more after shocks in the area registering 5.9, 5.3 & 6.2 on the Richter scale today also. http://www.volcanolive.com/volcanolive.html heres some other useful links http://earthquake.usgs.gov/ http://www.sveurop.org/gb/news/news.htm and also the sun is acting up again,we should have some aurora activity tonight as well. The geomagnetic field is in storm mode which will affect planet earths weather. There have been four cme's(coronal mass ejections) in the last couple of days that will be reaching earth possibly tonight or tomorrow (3rd). http://www.n3kl.org/sun/noaa.html satchmo.

Hi Pupp,

I don't quite know what to make of this:

http://www.volcanolive.com

Wednesday 5th January
Correction of previous report

The previous reports of volcanic activity in the Andaman Islands are incorrect. I have received confirmation from Prof. D. Chandrasekharam who has visited the area. He stated that the volcanic arc is not showing any activity. No volcanic activity is seen in all the volcanoes in Sumatra and the Barren and Norcondam volcanic islands.

The Andaman volcano's were misreported by the press according to Indian volcanologist. Mud volcano's were mistaken for erupting volcano's ??? However in PapuaNewGinea Manam volcano has been erupting and 9300 people are being evacuated. PNG has asked for international assistance with food and disaster help, also vessels for relocating the people. So far the international community has ignored the pleas for help!!! Must not be newsworthy enough in light of whats happening around the Indian ocean??? satchmo. http://www.sveurop.org/gb/news/news.htm

Hi Satchmo,
I have been following the Manam Island volcano with some interest, as I lived in PNG for a while. John Seach has done an admirable job of trying to alert people to the needs of these people, in vain, it would seem. However, they have been evacuated to Madang. While they stood on the beaches, waiting to be rescued, 6 of them were swept to their deaths by lahars. It is appalling, but I think part of the reason for the slow response may be that the authorities had to get permission from the Chief to remove the people from the island.
In fact, this volcano started erupting back in November, so I don't think it has been overshadowed by the Tsunami disaster. Just a tragic set of circumstances.
To see the history of the eruptions for December, go to:

Volcano On Alaska Peninsula Stirs, Ash Ejected
By Wes Hanna
Kodiak Daily Mirror Writer
1-6-5

One of the largest and most active volcanoes on the Alaska Peninsula near the settlements of Perryville and Chignik has grown increasingly restless since the turning of the new year, sending up small ash plumes and experiencing increased seismic tremors.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory on Tuesday upgraded Mount Veniaminof Volcano's level of concern to yellow for activity considered higher than the normal background.

The level of concern is up from green, indicating normal activity, but isn't yet to the orange level when an eruption is expected to occur or is occurring.

Veniaminof is about 300 miles southwest of the Kodiak city area. A large eruption of the volcano would not have an effect on Kodiak.

Weak seismic tremors were observed starting Jan. 1 and increased slightly over the next few days. Ash emissions were observed in images of Veniaminof taken around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

At around 10 a.m. Tuesday a pilot flying at 14,000 feet noted small ash emissions from Veniaminof, said Ken Dean, acting coordinating scientist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Later in the day, 19 separate ash bursts were observed from Veniaminof, none of which escalated above 500 meters from the summit, Dean said. The most recent reports from Perryville included constant ash emissions today at around 10 a.m.

"Activity at this volcano has been on and off over the past year," Dean said.

There is no evidence from the seismic data collected at this time that events larger than those already observed will occur, the AVO indicated in a press release.

AVO warns, however, that steam and ash emissions may continue intermittently and could pose a hazard to people and low-flying aircraft in the vicinity of the active cone.

AVO monitors Veniaminof continually with a network of nine seismic recording devices capable of detecting very small earthquakes beneath the volcano. The AVO also monitors the volcano using satellite imagery collected every four to six hours to detect changes in surface temperature, ash emission, and ash cloud movement.

Veniaminof has erupted at least 12 times in the last 200 years. The last significant eruption occurred in 1993-95.

During that period of volcanic activity, intermittent emissions of ash, steam and occasional ejection of debris occurred, according to the AVO Web site. Ash fall and rumbling noises were reported in Perryville, about 22 miles to the south, and a light dusting of ash was reported in Port Heiden about 60 miles to the northeast.

A slightly more energetic eruption occurred in 1939, depositing several centimeters of fine ash on areas within about 52 miles of the volcano, including Perryville.

Minor explosions producing some ash also occurred as recently as 2002.
