Dead whale left outside embassy
BBC
19 Jan 06
QUOTE
A huge beached whale has been dumped outside the Japanese embassy in Berlin in a Greenpeace anti-whaling protest.

The controversial environmental activists hauled the fin whale to Berlin from the Baltic coast after finding it beached on a sandbank.

The dead whale measured 17m (56ft) long and weighed 20 tonnes.

Activists are trying to demonstrate that there is no need to kill the mammals for research - as Japan does - because cadavers can be found.

Japan is expected to kill 935 minke whales in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary during the first four months of 2006.

The International Whaling Commission imposed a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986, but Japan resumed whale hunting the following year.

Critics dispute Japan's claim to be whaling for scientific purposes, saying whale meat often ends up on restaurant tables.

A Greenpeace banner in Berlin read:
"Science doesn't need harpoons! Stop the senseless whaling!"

The fin whale in Berlin - between 10 and 20 years old - is believed to have got lost in the Baltic while looking for herring. Its normal habitat is the North Atlantic.

The whale is due to be taken to Stralsund on the coast for scientific examination after the Greenpeace protest.

I think that the Japanese whaling has a lot to do with non-recognition of Antarctic land claims and non-recognition of southern ocean fishing zones.

Japan and Russia are arguing over islands in the western pacific and I suspect that Japan is trying to use whaling in sanctuary zones as a lever in order to get its own way over the disputed islands. I suspect the deal is, "give us the islands and we will recognise southern hemisphere area claims".

Another factor is that Japan is unhappy with western interference with its "cultural" treatment of other cetaceans and animals in general. While the world is focussed on whales, the Japanese are busily cruelly slaughtering other creatures such as dolphins.

S.Africa detains anti-whaling ship
Friday Jan 27 05:54 AEDT

South Africa has detained an anti-whaling ship which sailed from Australia last month to harass Japanese whalers in Antarctic waters.

The Farley Mowat, which sailed from Melbourne on December 6, has been detained with its captain in Cape Town harbour over safety concerns.

The Canadian vessel, a ship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, docked in Cape Town on Wednesday after seven weeks at sea harassing Japanese whaling ships in Antarctic waters.

An official from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) said the ship did not have the required certification.

"They don't have the right certificates for the skipper, the first-mate or the chief engineer," the official told Reuters.

The official said the detention was in line with Canadian maritime laws and followed correspondence from Canada requesting the authorities check the ship.

South Africa gets involved at Canada's request! I get a nasty smell regarding this especially as Australian Maritime Unions have a history of being tough on vessels which are unseaworthy, maltreat sailors or do not have proper paperwork. As the ship sailed from Melbourne (the site of the toughest union officials) I think it would be OK.

Are Canada and South Africa in cahoots with Japan in this issue? I can see where amoral Canadian officials would trade support for baby seal bashing with Japan but what can Japan offer in trade to South Africa? Maybe the deal is on a personal finance level. How many additional new Mercedes' will appear in South African goverment officials' garages this year?

Will this ship be detained until the slaughtering season is over and then be released with profuse apologies when the government lawyers decide that the paperwork concerns are irrelevant because the ship is not trading for profit?
