Population Hit 6.5 Billion on February 25th, 2006

QUOTE
On Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7:16 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, the population here on this good Earth is projected to hit 6.5 billion people.

Along with this forecast, an analysis by the International Programs Center at the U.S. Census Bureau points to another factoid, Robert Bernstein of the Bureau's Public Information Center advised LiveScience. Mark this on your calendar: Some six years from now, on Oct. 18, 2012 at 4:36 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the Earth will be home to 7 billion folks.

These are estimates, of course, but clear trends emerge from the data behind them.

Population profile

A report issued by the Bureau in March 2004 noted that world population hit the 6-billion mark in June 1999. "This figure is over 3.5 times the size of the Earth's population at the beginning of the 20th century and roughly double its size in 1960," the study explained.

Even more striking is that the time required for the global population to grow from 5 billion to 6 billion-just a dozen years-was shorter than the interval between any of the previous billions.

On average, 4.4 people are born every second.

The population on Earth today is nearly four times the number in 1900 [graph]. Behind that phenomenal global increase is a vast gulf in birth and death rates among the world's countries. But according to population experts, this gulf is not a simple divide that perpetuates the status quo among the have and have-not nations.

Birth dearth

"What is worrisome about this demographic divide is not the differences among nations' population growth rates, but the disparities associated with these trends ... disparities in living standards, health, and economic prospects," explained Mary Kent, co-author along with Carl Haub, of a Population Reference Bureau report issued last month titled "Global Demographic Divide."

Kent, editor of the Population Bulletin, and Haub, a senior demographer at the Population Reference Bureau, reported that news of declining population in Europe fueled concern about a global "birth dearth," but there is continuing population growth in developing countries. The question, they asked, is which demographic trend is the world facing?

"The reality is that both trends are occurring," Haub said. "The dramatic fertility decline during the 20th century coincided with improved health, access to family planning, economic development, and urbanization."

Kent and Haub also reported that most countries will experience population growth through 2050, as the world adds a projected 3 billion more people to the total.

Remarkably, despite the many new developments over the past 50 years, one fact looks very much the same, explained Kent and Haub: Populations are growing most rapidly where such growth can be afforded the least-an observation that has changed little over time, they said.

Yes, let's have lots of children. All the more to put profit into the pockets of capitalist scum. All the more to consume dwindling resources. All the more to contribute to global warming. All the more to die when the planet exacts its revenge on us.

We really are a stupid species.

Do you wonder why our government encourages "be fruitful and multiply"? Large families are rewarded for having over 5+ children.

When I was a young boy, there were estimated to be about 2.4 billion people on the planet.

The population has almost tripled in my lifetime. There must be a reason for this.

Could it be that there will be a mega Earth catastrophy/cleansing?

Could beeeeee!

Should we worry our widdle heads 'bout it?

No, but be prepared to provide your own energy source and your own food and water. Do not depend on the system to provide for you.
Katrina is a good warning to remember.

The planet's human population will continue to climb because capitalism wants it that way.
The more people then the more customers and the more poverty stricken workers thankful to be exploited as slaves in sweat shops.

Capitalism does not care one whit for conservation of resources, mineral or organic and will happily see millions of people starve and die so long as its profits keep rolling in. Capitalism does not care how many innocent kids die horrible deaths in countries entrenched with poverty so long as it can continue to exploit those threadbare countries unmercifully.

Already 70% of the planet's non-renewable resources are used up. Even if a strenuous program of depopulation by attrition was to be put into place right now, the remaining 30% will be used long before the population could be brought down to sustainable levels. This means that those people still alive when the resources start to close out will have to suffer and many will die until balance can be established.

None of my children will be having children of their own and this makes me happy because I know that none of my descendents will suffer the capitalist-induced famines of the future.

IMHO, the current human population has about 18% worthy individuals.

Yikes you guys-

I wouldnt worry too much about the "overpopulation" on this planet.

I would worry about the 18% who feel they alone are worthy of survival --- and see no problem in subtle genocide for the rest of the populations they feel unworthy-- (yes, including certain percentages of the United States).

I'm against this type of genocide and believe that God doesnt need an Elite few - or any human to control His population for Him by following in Hitler's footsteps.

Hi Boldylocks, the 18% was merely a hypothetical number based on those I have lived amongst for 44 years. I have never been to a foreign country and have only been to about 7 states so I do not have the data to make a real assessment.

Please, pay no attention to my rantings.

No worries, PuPP!

A link I recently read regarding a college professor (nicknamed "Dr. Lizard") being cheered by 400 of his peers, because of his speech on how effective synthetic Ebola Virus would be in keeping World population down really freaked me out before.

Dr. Lizard is a fitting name for this dude-- who seems more Draconian Reptile than human (though I dont think many humans are much better).

Hello Pupp and Boldylocks - there are diseases that are contradictory to discuss their origins because they are population reducers. One other example other than natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina that reduce the world population. The ebola virus, SARS, and the Aids viruses are just to name a few. Another issue is nuclear weapons and energy.
Alternative energy that is being looked at is Nuclear energy which I do not think is a good alternative. When we were children, most of us were taught that nuclear energy is more sufficient. If implemented, the energy will start the reactions which will cause a meltdown reducing the world's population. The Chernobol incident in Russia is a good example. Lots of people are still dying from the back lash of radiation from that area. It is still unsafe and yet many towns near there continue to reproduce not knowing the consequences. That's more to think about.
