I want to add a word of caution here, PuPP. Last year, I think it was, ArchAngel posted on GLP that ZoneAlarm had been bought out by a company in Israel.

Take it for what it's worth. I never downloaded the freebie again.

Hi PuPP,

I’ve recently joined your forum. Love the layout and structure. You have some really interesting and meaty topics here - looking forward to contributing bricks.gif

I’m using Zonelabs Firewall, and find it far better than Norton – takes a lot less system resources - thought you might also be interested in these links for (good) anti-spyware software to add to your page.

Zone Alarm sucked my cpu so I started to use Kerio. I like it and it works good.

deisler writes "Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) helps users control how their computers exchange data with other computers on the Internet or local network. Kerio Personal Firewall is a necessity for all desktop computers connected to broadband Internet, using DSL, cable, ISDN, WiFi or satellite modems. Within an organization, Kerio Personal Firewall prevents a single computer from attacks initiated by internal users. Remote workstations and laptops running KPF are protected from Internet born attacks.

Last Changes:

* 4.1.1 - September 29, 2004 fixed problems with firewire adapters when they were disabled or computer was hibernated
* fixed bug that rules for some application
didn't work
* fixed conflicts with some other software's kernel drivers (like InCD, VitalAgent, ProtectCD, etc). Also known as NO_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS bug.
* IDS no longer detects and drops attacks when user disables firewall
* KPF's IDS ruleset was revised
* fixed bug when connection to closed port was sometimes logged as Kerio VPN

Sometimes when you're poor you have no choice.

Zone Alarm is better than not having any firewall. But perhaps other members can share some alternatives.

Hey Without Fear, I recognize that name!

Glad you made it here.

Isn't it wonderful to be able to come together and then walk away better off or more knowledgeable than when we arrived?

Great toast PuPP!

I’m all for that – It should keep us in work for the rest of our lives.

Just added a post to BJ1s thread on Aspartame – getting the population of this poison would be a start to improving minds and bettering lives.

Keeping them out of our PCs is getting harder all the time.

Couple more intrusion detectors that I use -

(evaluation free - but require payment to remove threats found)

Not sure how good it is - but I keep it running anyway!

Steve Gibson - internet guru

Good site where the website will scan and test your computer for open ports.

I love that Guy.

I learned a lot from him and a guy named Leo Laporte from Access magazine in the daily news or LA times, I forget which one. He was soo helpful with our computers. Of course, it was discontinued because he told the truth about how vulnerable we really are when we first get online with no defenses up.

I still have a stack of the access magazines here, I saved them. I need to go through and post some of his tips one day. One more mission.

Thanks for the links - isn't it great to have a forum where you can actually click on a link?

Wait till you get to the Strange Skulls thread in Ancient History section and see all of the images there.

This place just gets better and better – thank you. I’m sure I going to meet some great people here! The skulls are amazing – I’ll need lots of time to work through them all.

Thanks for the effort you’ve put into this ‘goldmine’

One more link for the files – 'HijackThis' from merijn.org

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

HijackThis is a VERY powerful utility that can usually identify the presence of nasties on the PC.
**Use with caution, and always make back-ups**.
Site also includes other neat utilities.

Links are included to forums that can help decipher the results.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/forums.html

I use it regularly.

And then the warning - yikes!

I'd say pass on that unless you're an advanced user.

But the information and links are welcomed here if it's legit and actually works.

I'm glad you liked the Strange Skulls. We don't see those in any schoolbooks nor on Discovery Channel. Well, at least I never had...not until the internet.

Yes, lots of gems scan be found here as well as kindred souls.

Don't forget this one:

Protowall is an "evil IP" blocker, like Peer Guardian, but much faster. PG really takes too much CPU. Protowall can be on full time, and you won't notice the speed loss too much, if any, because it works on the driver level.
I'd recommend the stable 1.42 version (v2 didn't work here).

Ideally, you regularly make new IP lists for it with Blocklist Manager, which downloads and merges blacklists from different chosen categories into one and lets you export them.

If you have Protowall on all the time, you only need to export to Protowall, but you can export to a lot of P2P programs as well, if you want to use them "safe" and seperately.

For anyone having security problems or just plain paranoid (that isn't a bad thing in this day and age), picking up a router with a hardware firewall is a good idea. It won't stop everything so I wouldn't rely on it exclusively, but it does take a major load off of whatever software firewall you're using. If you need to see the difference it makes, stick your system in the demilitarized zone and watch your soft firewall's logs fly smileNew4.gif

Just make sure to change its password to something other than the default (which is usually BLANK). And my poor dad was wondering why his computers kept getting so many viruses...
