In pictures: How the world is changing
BBC News
QUOTE
While the effect of human activity on the global climate is hotly debated, physical signs of environmental change are all around us. Some scientists say an increase in the rate of the melting of the world's glaciers is evidence of global warming.

Argentina's Upsala Glacier was once the biggest in South America, but it is now disappearing at a rate of 200 metres per year.

Glacial change

American photographer Gary Braasch has been documenting images of environmental change since 1999.

The image on the left is from an 1859 etching of the Rhone glacier in Valais, Switzerland, and shows ice filling the valley.

In 2001, the glacier had shrunk by some 2.5km, and its 'snout' had shifted about 450 metres higher up.

Rising tides

Some scientists predict that a warmer climate will trigger more violent storms, which will cause increased rates of coastal erosion.

This is a section of shoreline at Cape Hatteras in North Carolina in the USA, pictured in 1999 and 2004. The southern United States and Caribbean region were battered by a series of powerful hurricanes last year.

Rising sea levels are also expected to speed up coastal erosion.

No snow

As the climate warms up, mountainous regions may experience lower levels of snowfall.

FACTOID:

As the Antarctic, Greenland and Arctic glaciers melt, sea levels will rise.

Coastline cities are in the most immediate danger in the coming years as ocean levels rise.

But there will also be massive quakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, cyclones, typhoons and the worst wicked weather ever experienced in modern times.

OOPS, those things are already occuring.

HBO has been broadcasting a 1 hour program called "Too Hot Not To Handle" that displays more revealing images of the melting polar ice plus much more information and possible solutions.

I highly recommend that this 1 hour film should be viewed by everyone.

I think that the evidence for GW is overwhelming now. My gut-feeling (rarely wrong) is that it has reached the point of no return and the earth is now beginning to release stored greenhouse gases. In a few years those gases will be in far greater quantities than that released by mankind. This means that we have lost the ability to prevent further GW.

I strongly recommend that you pepare for the inevitable because the PTB will stay in denial until society collapses in on their heads. Get to the libraries and study survival, native foods, subsistence technology, bush medicines and blacksmithing. Go out into the wilds on weekends and vacations to practice what you learn and to live with the land. It is knowledge and experience that will keep you alive in the post-GW era.

Wise words.

Has anyone taken notice of all the Survivor type shows on tv in the past few years?

I've been checking out a series called Survivorman on the Discovery Channel and I learned how to make a simple solar still to convert sea water to drinking water.

It's important that we learn to be self sustaining in the event of a natural disaster or catastrophe and not rely on our governments for food, water and aid.

Remember Katrina?

Solar cycle 'spurs greenhouse gases'
Tuesday May 23 06:33 AEST
Greenhouse gases are known to spur global warming, but scientists say that global warming in turn spurs greenhouse gas emissions - which means Earth could get hotter faster than climate models predict.

Two scientific teams, one in Europe and another in California, reached the same basic conclusion: when Earth has warmed up in the past, due to the sun's natural cycles, more greenhouse gases have been spewed into the atmosphere.

As greenhouse gas levels rose, so did Earth's temperature, the scientists reported.

Earth has not endlessly warmed up, though, because these natural solar cycles ended, letting the planet cool down and prompting a corresponding drop in greenhouse gas emissions, the scientists reported.

But these previous periods of heating and cooling were not influenced by the burning of fossil fuels, and the current resulting trend toward higher global average temperatures, according to Margaret Torn of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

"It means the warming is happening faster, each decade is actually warming faster than it would have," Torn said in a telephone interview.

"It's the pace of change that will be one of the big problems.

"It's how humans adapt and the cost that will depend on the rate of change of climate."

Global warming is caused in part by the emission of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane.

These gases are emitted naturally but are also the result of the burning of fossil fuels, especially coal and petroleum products.

These gases swaddle Earth in a layer that lets the sun's warmth in but does not allow it to easily escape.

Over the past 30 years, Earth has warmed by 0.6 degrees celsius, NASA has reported.

Over the past 100 years, it has warmed by 0.8 degrees, indicating a recent acceleration in warmth.

Current climate models predict temperature increases of 1.5 to 4.5 degrees, but Torn's team found that additional carbon dioxide caused by the natural solar cycle could push those estimates higher.

Taking this into account could mean temperature increases of 1.6 to six degrees, the scientists said. The higher temperatures are more likely, they said in a statement.

The European team estimated that global warming in the next century may be 15 per cent to 78 per cent higher than current estimates because these predictions fail to take into account the feedback mechanism involving carbon dioxide emissions.

Both articles are to be published on Friday in Geophysical Research Letters.

At last some recognition that GW is going to be more rapid and more severe than the fairyland scientists would have us believe.

Thanks Pupp - for that slap in the face... lol
Seeing proofs like that - do that to you right... doesn't it!
Great pics. Showing the truth!!
lol

I don't believe in manmade global warming you know. I've read a lot about it for some time now and I think this is based on cyclical changes.
And TPTB knows how to use it for their benefits.

No one is prepared. We're rather using money to learn about this "global warming" than to prepare. Maybe I should buy a summer-house in S-Europe rather than in N.Norway as Norway is going to be an ice-desert in some decades?! lol'

Neither do most people as they gas up their SUVs and Hummers.

Factoid: The Co2 emissions increase is DIRECTLY related to mankind.

But I agree, perhaps some of the intense heat we have been experiencing since 1988 is just a solar cycle.

Regardless, we all contribute to our own demise via the all-consuming lifestyles we live in.

Reclaim all fresh water
Use Clean ENERGY
