Well, PuPPfans, it's now been 18 years since ol' Tex Arcana and CyberSue stood on the front porch of the Last Redoubt here on Caney Creek and tied the knot in front of family, a few friends and country preacher. J.W. Keel, whose cattle added to the ambience grazing the pasture where our house sits, showed up with his tractor to plow up a garden spot a few yards west unaware of what was going on that day, but it seemed a fitting alternative wedding march. We got a Baptist preacher from a little country church over the hill past the pioneer cemetary to do the ceremony. He had once pastored up in Montana where I had wasted some time once taking an intro course in geology. Neither I nor my bride were Baptists nor even churchgoers but we wanted something in the Caney Creek tradition. Two brothers who had my property back in the Republic of Texas days had been the first Baptist preachers in the county(then Red River County) when Dr. Daniel Rowlett brought the first bunch from Ol' Virginny to settle west of Bois D'Arc Creek in 1836. One of them built a dugout cabin supported by bois d'arc staves which I have searched in vain to find ever since I dug in for the duration myself back in '86. The Montana preacher moved on from the Red River long years past and may be over Jordan for all I know. Sue's mother who attended was a devout Baptist and I think the choice of preachers made her happy. She died in a house fire in '99. The porch, which I'd built out of oak pallets and cedar fence palings, had steps overlain with cedar sort of resembling an old rolltop desk, of which I was kind of proud as a rustic artistic touch. Granny B (Sue's mother) commented "Somebody needs to learn how to build steps right." Well, the porch has been been rebuilt three times since then. Yesterday, as I cut a cedar paling to replace an original which had finally rotted and pulled loose, the memory of that day returned. Guess I never did learn to build steps "right"; doubt I ever will.

We picked March 23rd, as I recall, because that year it was a full moon in Scorpio and both of us had been born a year and a day apart in Scorpio, Sue being the elder. I don't know if that choice made good astrological sense but it's worked out so far. We didn't do anything special today except patch up the old chicken house to make it rain resistent to store boxes of bilge which cluttered the house. Most contained toys and clothes the grandchildren had outgrown but with which we sentimental packrats, couldn't bring ourselves to part. On second thought, it was a kind of quiet celebration in the Caney Creek tradition after all.
