The Japanese had already announced that they can create garments that project an image from behind onto the front of the garment to give the appearance of invisibility.

It sort of reminds me of The Predator movies.

Uniform that makes soldiers invisible in the works

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) The Army is hunting for a new military uniform that can make soldiers nearly invisible, grant superhuman strength and provide instant medical care.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is up for the task.

The school said Wednesday it has been awarded a five-year, $50 million dollar grant to develop the armor, which could detect threats and protect against projectiles and biological or chemical weapons.

"We're not there yet, but it's not science fiction," said Ned Thomas, director of the MIT-affiliated Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies.

All this would be achieved by developing particle-sized materials and devices -- called "nanotechnology" -- nestled into the uniform's fabric.

Supercharged shoes could release energy when soldiers jump, propelling them over a 20-foot wall. Micoreactors could detect bleeding and apply pressure. Light-deflecting material could make the suit blend in with surroundings.

MIT's research centers had been working on nanotechnology ideas long before getting involved with the Army, but not with military applications in mind. But the groundwork has been laid for revolutionary advances, Thomas said.

Some of this technology is feasible but shoes that jump a soldier over a 20 foot wall is not because the human physique does not have the necessary structures to support the forces involved.

It might be possible to release a big bunch of energy in a soldier's boots but this energy must be transmitted to his body as a whole. This energy will be the same as if the soldier jumped from a 20 foot height - just applied in reverse.

If you make thrust at the boots, it must be applied up his legs and onto his pelvis so that his body can be lifted. If this is transmitted when his legs are straight then there is the likelihood of fractures and joint damage especially if the soldier is carrying a heavy pack. If the thrust is applied with bent legs, then the muscles, tendons and joints of the legs and lower back must be strong enough to cope with the thrust or the soldier folds up at the bendy bits.

It might be poossible that the soldier could be fired from a squatting position. I think this would pop knees and ankles. Then there is the problem of direction. If the soldier is leaning back too far, then he becomes a Katherine Wheel doing sixteen backward somersaults in the tuck position (difficulty 5.6) and ends up splat in the dirt. If he leans too far forward, he becomes part of the wall.

And if you can get a soldier high enough to clear a 20 foot wall, he's got to come down sometime. Yep, two impacts to the legs and pelvis each jump. The veterans' hospitals would be full of twisted, broken soldiers.

Jumping Jack boots would need to come complete with a support skeleton for successful operation and then it would need to be such that it did not interfere with the soldier's other physical activities.

Perhaps these researchers need to be reminded that the "Six Million Dollar Man" was fiction and be introduced to that pinnacle of stone age technology - the ladder.

Hi uggliozzi, spring loaded boots could allow a man to jump 2-3 times normal distance. I've seen some pretty cool demonstrations of spring loaded mini stilts and these short guys could easily touch the top of a basketball backboard, but I think you're right in regards to supercharged shoes.

Ya know, this nanotechnology stuff is going to blow us away when we see all of the possible applications demonstrated.

It almost frightens me as I know the criminal element of our current rulers will use this advanced technology for their own gains and it will be sold to be used as weapons on the populations around the world.

It is an interesting concept, however, I do have to agree supercharged shoes couldn't propell them over a 20-foot wall unless they were thinking about using some of their black project antigravity technology. IMO it's a waste of time developing cloaking technology. It might seem like a good idea but more work should be done on the suits to actually make them bullet proof.

I had the idea once of designing one that would have some type of fabric that would become like steel when a current was passed through it but would normally be soft and pliable. It also had chameleon capabilities but not as advanced as their's appears to be. Of course I'd like to see what happens when a powder like flour or even mud is applied to the suit. Even if they're invisible, they're still gonna make tracks when walking through sand or snow. That's why I thought about using anti-grav technology.

It ain't gonna help you any if you're invisible in the middle of a mine field. lol.gif
