ICQ-acquired by Aol in '98. :o Seems very secure...but ads and banners are raunchy dating/porn ads. Also, google search is imbedded. I don't trust Google.

MSN-Microsoft no thanks...Hotmail...Messenger...wormy and virus prone:-/

AOL-Time Warner??? hijacked files on many computers...can't trust...no thanx :-/

Y!-I loved it but security is lacking. Junkmail all the time. Can't use unless cookies are open to 3rdparties. AsAMF...all cookie gates must be wide open to use either!...nono2.gif Ads and banners after the new version was released is annoying! Old versions better IMO.

I want to email/IM safely and for free w/o aggresive ads. Is that too much to ask?

I was considering Trillian...but I'm afraid all cookie gates must be open. I hear it is ad free. However, emailing is not an option.

Gmail..is Googlemail-ummm they scan your emails...not necessarily for bugs but for content so I've heard....Alphabetmail.....G is for Gotcha!

Gaim is nice for instant messaging and works with everything (in fact, it works with more IM protocols than I even knew existed). It's open sourced so spyware and other nasties can't be hiding in it smileNew4.gif No ads or any of that crap either.

I've never used the Windows version, but I'd imagine it should be more or less the same.

Here's the link if you want to check it out:

Gaim you say? Hmmm..I ran across that name but I think I wrote it off as GMail...lol. Does it have an email client too? Not that it really matters b/c I hardly receive email anymore...I'm so use to junkmail and chainmail...I never get actual mail anymore... sadoriginal.gif

Thanx Nightshade...I will check it out. I was just to the point of surrendering to either stick with Yahoo or ICQ. I read ICQ was designed by Israeli's??? and then purchased by AOL. I really don't like that combination. Though it seems...it was very secure from "outsiders" before the transition to AOL.

I am mighty paranoid these days.

I'm a Y! junkie...I know Yahooing is bad for my comp but I hate kicking the habit entirely. Deep in my gut, I am VERY uncomfortable with having to allow ALL cookies in. What really bugs me...is if I turn off any cookies...then INSTANTLY I am kicked out of both YM and YMail. I guess I could customize my Opera browser to keep cookies open only for Y! but why would I want to do that? Who knows what Y! has contracted and with whom. I don't remember this in the past...until I was forced to upgrade YM6. My firewall also works overtime....so I block many ?pings? from Y! esp. if I'm not using them at the time. YM! would log me in...even though I logged out...on its own. I then had to just keep it shut off...unless I was checking to see who was logged on. It became too much work. My family is balking because they can never see my smiley...so I need to find something safer..or compatible...and get them to convert.

I don't like that...turning on even though I turned you off. I didn't say turn on.

Oh Sorry TMI. Y! withdrawals pullhair.gif

You know I took a look at Skype...I was under the impression it was for webphones only. lol2.gif Thankx...

So Skype and Gaim....I wonder which will take the Gold? I guess I will have to test both to see how they handle cookies. I'm not that acronym saavy to figure out what protocols or what nots must use certain cookie settings.

Hi, Quemonius.

Nightshade gave you good info for gaim. That would be my choice.

Zone Alarm was bought by a Israeli's??? company.

You have every reason to be Paranoid, we're being watched 24/7 by every modern bit of technology available. Just waiting for us to say or do something wrong so they can make examples of us on the nightly news.gif. Oh My! Is that what happened to Zone Alarm? I dumped them when it started acting funny after an upgrade. I switched to Sygate.

I found this IM Comparision Chart

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of...tant_messengers

I'm sure it is helpful...once I figure out what half of the technical jargon means....I mean "really" means.

I also have to figure out what features I want and don't want.

Encryption...I want that right? Scramble my messages.

Toolkit..W32...Do I really want that? Is the W for Windows or Winsock (whatever that is)

File Transfer????

Smileys...Definately

Plugins????Are they necessary? Plugin to what and from where?

3rdparty addons... what's added...cool features + spyware or just cool features? I wonder if that is why the cookie floodgates have to be open???

Single vs Multi protocol??? Which is safer verses convenient?

Gaim uses

Gtk Toolkit
No encryption
Partial file transfer
Smileys
No games
No voice/webcam (good me too paranoid)
PLugins and 3rd party addons

Skype is not on this particular chart...in order to compare....I have to dig.

Trillian is there but isn't that Mozilla now? Hasn't Mozilla been compromised?

Gaim doesn't use encryption by default, but there's a plugin you can get for it to encrypt your messages. Paranoia has become an unfortunate necessity.

Multiprotocol means that it handles different messengers. Gaim and Trillian are multi-protocol, so you can use them with ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo etc. Something like MSN Messenger would be single protocol -- meaning you can only use it with MSN Messenger, and it can't access any other networks. When it comes to proprietary software, I usually run the other way as fast as I can when I see the words "3rd party addons," but when it comes to open source, the 3rd party is usually other users who've created new features. Also, I have yet to see an addon from the open sourced end of things that adds itself on without consulting you (or "consulting" you in the middle of the fine print in the EULA...where you would only see it going through the thing with a fine toothed comb)

Not sure what's going on with Trillian as I've never paid much attention to it, but if Mozilla's been compromised I'll be more than a little upset sadoriginal.gif I love my firefox!

Plugins are purely optional, but some of them are one's you'll likely really want, like encryption. It also has a whole ton of smileys to pick and choose from.

Hi, Quemonius! I am glad I'm not the only one that gets thrown by tech talk!

On page 2 of the "other thread" (System something), Hoss offered the websites for Thunderbird e-mail. From his post, I'd say it sounds pretty good, being similar to Outlook Express. Then Nightshade suggested the same after I posted problems with Outlook Express, which I fixed.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird
http://www.nidelven-it.no/articles/..._to_thunderbird

The disk for downloading 6.0 came a little over a week ago, but I have had a case of the blahs for that length of time, so have not called Microsoft techs for the download, which was requested by them. After that's done, I will look further into Thunderbird e-mail and may get brave enough to download Linux. (With fear and trembling) smileNew4.gif

Here's my input on IM (Instant Messenger) services from my own experiences.

ICQ: I trusted until it changed ownership.
I will never use it again.

MSN messenger: UNSAFE - Too many script kiddies (pssst... script kiddies are the aliens - remember, the so-called aliens look like anyone you know) and wanna be hackers.
I will never use it again.

AIM (AOL's FREE Instant Messenger): UNSAFE - Ads, cookies, active X, script kiddies, wanna be hackers and too many porn ads in the chatrooms. (Gotta be run by Israelis who hate us gentiles.)
Still a member but rarely ever use it.

Pal Talk: It was neat to hear someones voice over the internet, but it used too many resources on my old comp.

AOL: I would never use that corrupted service again even if you paid me.

Hotmail: I have had the same Hotmail acct since 2001.

Thank you ALL for the valuable resources on this thread.

Yup, we can probably help you to get it working if you can give us some specifics about what's not working (error messages, freezing, just not opening etc). Are you having problems installing it, or does it install okay but not run properly? I'm not sure exactly what Gaim requires in terms of resources, but unless your machine is ancient (like a 386 or earlier), it should be enough. Some system specifications would be good smileNew4.gif

If you'd still like to get Gaim up and running, we can help you do it smileNew4.gif
