Space engineer kills co-worker, self at NASA
21 April 2007
(AFP)
QUOTE
HOUSTON, Texas - A NASA contractor took two co-workers hostage at Johnson Space Center Friday, killing one of them before turning the revolver on himself, officials said, just days after the bloodiest school shooting in US history.

Bill Phillips, an engineer with Jacobs Engineering who has worked for NASA for about 12 years, barricaded himself inside the building after managing to sneak a revolver past security at the sprawling space center campus, police and NASA officials said.

Phillips shot David Beverly in the chest, killing the NASA employee, and later shot himself in the head inside Building 44, a communications and engineering facility, officials said.

The second hostage, Fran Crenshaw, a NASA contract worker, was found duct-taped to a chair a few hours after the standoff began. She was treated at a hospital and released.

Police had tried to negotiate with the man but all they heard from the room was another gunshot. When they rushed in the room they found the two men dead and the woman bound at her hands and ankles.

All three were electrical engineers in their early 50s who knew each other, and they may even had had lunch together earlier in the day, Johnson Space Center director Michael Coates told a news conference.

Officials did not know the motive behind the killing.

“Apparently there was some type of dispute between” Phillips and Beverly, Houston Police Chief Howard Hurtt told reporters.

Phillips lived alone, was not married and had no children, officials said.

“Up until recently he has been a good employee,” Coates said.

Coates said NASA had reviewed its security procedures, which were beefed up after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, in the wake of Monday’s massacre at Virginia Tech University but decided they did not need further tightening.

“We never believed this could happen to our family here,” Coates said.

Visitors and employees need badges to get into the space center, which is home to the space shuttle’s mission control, and cars are randomly checked for bombs. Guns are not allowed in the complex.

“We have a standard set of security rules that do include random vehicle searches,” NASA spokeswoman Eileen Hawley said at an earlier press conference.

“Certainly, I would believe that our security and our senior leadership is going to take a very close look at this incident, and see if there was anything that we should have done or could have done differently.”

NASA officials said mission operations were not interrupted by the incident.

NASA chief Michael Griffin headed to the centre after the shooting, the space agency said.

President George W. Bush was kept informed throughout the standoff, the White House said.

“The president was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of life and he will pray for the family members and co-workers, who surely must be shocked and grieving,” White House spokesman Tony Fratto told AFP.

NASA was rocked earlier this year when an astronaut was accused of driving hundreds for kilometers (miles) -- wearing a diaper to avoid stopping during the trip from Houston to Florida—to kidnap a rival for the affection of a space shuttle pilot.

In March, Lisa Nowak, who flew on a shuttle mission last year and was fired last month, pleaded not guilty to an attempted kidnapping charge stemming from the incident.

Friday’s shooting happened while the nation was mourning the 32 people shot dead by a South Korean student who killed himself after his rampage at Virginia Tech University on Monday.

Wesley David Beverly, 62
Date: April 20, 2007
Location: 2101 Nasa Parkway
Time: 1:55 p.m.
Victim: Wesley David Beverly, 62, of San Leon, Texas
Suspect: William Arthur Phillips Jr.
Status: Phillips apparently killed himself less than three hours after he fatally shot Beverly

Phillips, a 60-year-old quality assurance engineer at the Johnson Space Center, shot and killed his NASA supervisor Beverly about 1:55 p.m. and took a female coworker hostage. Phillips then shot himself about 4:30 p.m., just before HPD SWAT officers entered the office where he had barricaded himself.

Investigators believe Phillips committed the murder-suicide due to his belief he would lose his job following a poor job performance rating in a recent review.

A contractor who shot and killed his supervisor at NASA's Johnson Space Center before killing himself thought he was about to be fired after his job performance came into question, officials said Saturday.

"You're the guy who's going to get me fired," electrical engineer William Arthur Phillips Jr. said upon walking into the office of his supervisor, wielding a gun, according to police.

Within minutes he had killed Wesley David Beverly, 62, of San Leon, a highly regarded NASA engineer. He took as hostage Francelia "Fran" Crenshaw, 56, of Houston, and bound her with duct tape. Though escaping serious injury, she witnessed much of the horror of the ordeal, including Beverly's death.

This is odd indeed that the engineering departments are on the borderline to insanity. This NASA ordeal started all because the guy got written up for doing something on his job.
Here is another example of programming going bad. This person was sooo attached to his job that his job performance was gradually slacking and they write him up rather than helping this person. Or could this person be help?

Something just doesn't make sense about this whole think... They say it was related to a job performance issue but was it really? Still not convinced that there was a V-Tech connection and this was some type of mop up operation...

NASA gunman cited evaluation
NATION IN BRIEF / TEXAS
From Times Wire Reports
April 22, 2007
QUOTE
An "average" job review led a space engineer to buy a gun, then kill a co-worker he blamed for the appraisal and himself at NASA's Johnson Space Center, police said.

The engineer, Bill Phillips, 60, left rambling notes saying his victim, David Beverly, 62, had called him stupid.

Phillips, a contract employee at NASA for Pasadena-based Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., was provoked by a mid-March job review that criticized him for being late to meetings and other minor offenses, said Jacobs Senior Vice President Lon Miller.

But his overall score was "average" and Phillips was "considered a solid performer" until recently, Miller said.

Shuttle astronaut charged in kidnap, battery case
Feb. 5, 2007

QUOTE
An astronaut based at Johnson Space Center is in a Florida jail on felony charges, accused of attacking another woman, apparently over the affection of another NASA astronaut.

Orlando Police charged NASA astronaut , 43, with attempted kidnapping, attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She is being held in an Orange County, Fla., jail without bond.

"Her status is unchanged, but I cannot speculate beyond the present," said James Hartsfield, a NASA spokesman, in response to the incident and Nowak's future with the agency. Hartsfield is the NASA spokesman at Johnson Space Center, where the astronaut corps is headquartered.

Police arrested Nowak at a longterm shuttle bus stop at the Orlando International Airport after she was identified by U.S. Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman, who alleges she was attacked by Nowak.

Police later recovered a CO-2 powered BB gun, a new steel mallet, a new buck knife with a 4-inch blade, several large trash bags, a wig, six pairs of latex gloves, directions to Shipman's home and diapers Nowak had brought so she would not have to stop on her drive from Houston to Orlando, according to a charging affadavit.

After her arrest, Nowak told police she had driven from Houston to talk to Shipman about her relationship with NASA astronaut Bill Oefelein.

Nowak told police her association with Oefelein was "more than a working relationship, but less than a romantic relationship." When police searched Nowak's car at a LaQuinta Hotel near the airport, they found a letter indicating how much Nowak loved Oefelein.

Nowak waited for Shipman at the airport after she had arrived on a 1:05 a.m. flight from Houston. Shipman's luggage arrived on a later, 3 a.m. flight.

She noticed a woman with black hair wearing a hooded trenchcoat at the shuttle bus stop. The woman in the trenchcoat followed Shipman on the bus and as she departed for her car. Shipman told police she feared something was about to happen to her and quickly got into her car.

The woman in the coat slapped the car window and tried to open the door, according to the affadavit. Nowak asked Shipman for help, saying her boyfriend had not picked her up, then asked for a ride. She then asked Shipman if she could borrow her cell phone.

When Shipman rolled down her car window about 2 inches, Nowak sprayed pepper spray into the car and on Shipman's face, the affadavit said. Shipman sped away and drove to a manned booth where police were called.

Police found Nowak, wearing a different coat, at an airport parking lot. She was seen putting a black object and a plastic bag in a trash can.

Police found a trenchcoat with a hood attachment and a black wig in the trash can and a plastic bag containing the BB gun. Nowak said she was going to use the BB gun to entice Shipman to talk, but that she had never intended to harm her, according to the affadavit. She said she just wanted to talk to Shipman about her relationship with Oefelein.

Nowak was not on duty this weekend or today, Hartsfield said.

After her July mission, Nowak followed a normal three-month mission debriefing period. While not in training for another flight, Nowak was soon to resume duties as a capsule communicator, an astronaut assigned to Mission Control to act as a liaison with orbiting space shuttle crews.

Hartsfield said he did not know whether NASA would open its own personnel inquiry into the matter.

Terrorist or UFO Truth Seeker?
04.28.06
Reuters
QUOTE
LONDON -- To the United States, he is a seriously dangerous man who put the nation's security at risk by committing "the biggest military computer hack of all time."

But Briton Gary McKinnon says he is just an ordinary computer nerd who wanted to find out whether aliens and UFOs exist.

Gary McKinnon
user posted image

During his two-year quest, McKinnon broke into computers at the Pentagon, NASA and the Johnson Space Center as well as systems used by the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force.

U.S. officials say he caused $700,000 worth of damage and even crippled vital defense systems shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The unemployed computer programmer is now battling extradition to the United States, where, if found guilty, he faces up to 70 years in prison and fines of up to $1.75 million. His lawyer fears he could even be sent to Guantanamo Bay.

It's all a far cry from how he first got into hacking: watching a film about a teenage boy who breaks into a military central computer and almost starts World War III.

"I had seen the film War Games and I do remember clearly thinking at the time, that's amazing -- a great big military computer system and a young, spotty teenager," the softly spoken 39-year-old told Reuters in an interview.

A decade later, McKinnon, armed with information gleaned from The Hacker's Handbook, began his snooping.

During 2000 and 2001 from his home in Hornsey, north London, and using a computer with just a limited 56K dialup modem, he turned his sights on the American government and military.

"My main thing was wanting to find out about UFOs and suppressed technology," he said insisting his intention was not to cause damage. "I wanted to ... find out stuff the government wouldn't tell you about."

He said it was easy, despite being only a rank amateur. Using the hacking name "Solo," he discovered that many U.S. top-security systems were using an insecure Microsoft Windows program and had no password protection at all.

"So I got commercially available off-the-shelf software and used them to scan large military networks ... anything I thought might have possible links to UFO information," he said.

He said he came across a group called the Disclosure Project, which had expert testimonies from senior figures who said technology obtained from extraterrestrials did exist. One NASA scientist had reported that the Johnson Space Center had a facility where UFOs were airbrushed out of high-resolution satellite images. So, he hacked in.

"I saw what I'm convinced was some kind of satellite or spacecraft but it was manufactured by no means I have ever seen before -- there were no rivets, no seams, it was like one flawless piece of material. And that was above the Earth."

However, his probing came to an end in March 2002, when British police arrested him.

"I was completely obsessed," he said. "I was completely addicted. It was like a huge game but I was getting very paranoid."

McKinnon's own story might sound like the plot of a movie, but the charges he faces are deadly serious. He argues he is being made a scapegoat by U.S. authorities who want to deter other would-be hackers rather than address security flaws.

"I'm already being treated as a terrorist," he said. "I appear in an official American Army pamphlet ... in a guide to combating terrorism in the 21st century."

The next stage of his legal battle takes place May 10. But he hints that whatever happens, he has a lot more to tell.

"I can't talk about a lot of stuff that I found. It's just not the right time," he said with a smile.

Hacker says he found UFO evidence on JSC computers

QUOTE
SK: What did you find inside Nasa?

GM: One of these people was a Nasa photographic expert, and she said that in building eight of Johnson Space Centre they regularly airbrushed out images of UFOs from the high-resolution satellite imaging. What she said was there was there: there were folders called "filtered" and "unfiltered", "processed" and "raw", something like that.

I got one picture out of the folder, and bearing in mind this is a 56k dial-up, so a very slow internet connection, in dial-up days, using the remote control programme I turned the colour down to 4bit colour and the screen resolution really, really low, and even then the picture was still juddering as it came onto the screen.

But what came on to the screen was amazing. It was a culmination of all my efforts. It was a picture of something that definitely wasn't man-made.

It was above the Earth's hemisphere. It kind of looked like a satellite. It was cigar-shaped and had geodesic domes above, below, to the left, the right and both ends of it, and although it was a low-resolution picture it was very close up.

This thing was hanging in space, the earth's hemisphere visible below it, and no rivets, no seams, none of the stuff associated with normal man-made manufacturing.

SK: Is it possible this is an artist's impression?

GM: I don't know... For me, it was more than a coincidence. This woman has said: "This is what happens, in this building, in this space centre". I went into that building, that space centre, and saw exactly that.

SK: Do you have a copy of this? It came down to your machine.

GM: No, the graphical remote viewer works frame by frame. It's a Java application, so there's nothing to save on your hard drive, or at least if it is, only one frame at a time.

SK: So did you get the one frame?

GM: No.

Trial Date Set For Former Astronaut Lisa Nowak
April 17, 2007
QUOTE
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The trial of a former astronaut accused of attacking a romantic rival has been set for early fall, a spokeswoman for Florida's circuit court said Tuesday.

Trial for Lisa Nowak, 43, will begin Sept. 24 in an Orlando courtroom with Judge Marc Lubert presiding. Nowak has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary with assault and battery. She will have a status hearing June 29 and a pretrial conference July 17.

Nowak's attorney, Donald Lykkebak, had requested more time to evaluate his client's mental health.

Nowak was arrested in February after police say she drove from Houston to Florida, wearing a diaper so she would not have to stop, to confront Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman. Authorities have said Nowak had an affair with Shipman's boyfriend, Bill Oefelein. Nowak pepper-sprayed Shipman through a partially lowered car window, an arrest affidavit said.

Nowak's trial had previously been scheduled to begin in July.

How did this astronaunt manage to drive all the way from Texas to Florida and did not have to fill up on gas? She wore a diaper so that she did not have to go to the bathroom. Something going on in the space dust.

In my opinion, I see the events and mind controlled players as staged and presented to us as some poorly directed Hollywood 'B' movie.

Does anyone else think "it's all just a stage and we are merely players - performers and portrayers" when they watch some of these bizarre news events that dominate what we see, read and hear?
