According to NASA we just went through the local interstellar cloud system or helium breeze, otherwise known as Ophiuchus (the serpent bearer) the 13th house of the zodiac. http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2004/17...eliumstream.htm

Hi Satchmo - Talk about synchronicity!

I was tidying some books this weekend, and came across one ‘The 13th Zodiac’ by James Vogh. (1977) The sign of Arachne (the Spider). I put it aside to read later.

Now you post your link to Ophiuchus (the serpent bearer) the 13th house of the zodiac. Are there two thirteenth Zodiacs?

I must start reading!

Hi WF, I was'nt aware of there being two 13th houses of the the zodiac either! Havent researched it, the only thing that comes to mind about 13th house is from Mayan history and the Tzolkin. Seems the Mayans believed in thirteen stations of the zodiac. Please share whatever you find, satchmo.

Did a quick search and found these bits. Looks like Arachne was a hoax.

From another forum :
‘Another 13-sign zodiac that briefly gained some popularity/notoriety was the Arachne Zodiac, popularised by James Vogh in two books: Arachne Rising and The Cosmic Factor .

Unlike Berg, Vogh didn't find a new constellation but simply divided the 360 degrees of the zodiac into 13 signs - Arachne was (as I recall) placed in between Gemini and Cancer. It later transpired that the Arachne zodiac was a hoax; 'James Vogh' was the pseudonym of British sci-fi writer John Sladek.

In an interview, Sladek stated:
ìThe James Vogh books, Arachne Rising and The Cosmic Factor, were conceived as jokes, but very quickly turned into moneymaking enterprises. Only they didn't make a lot of money, either. So finally they turn out to have been a gigantic waste of time. Except that I can say that I invented or discovered the lost 13th sign of the zodiac.î

However, considering that they are supposed to be just jokes, the books are extremely well-researched and convincing. I suspect that Sladek may actually have started out as a sceptic but ended up half-convincing (at least) himself of the truth of his discovery.’

'Is there actually a 13th Zodiac Sign? Well says Maggie teacher there are two possibilities on this - one is known as Arachne the Spider. This arises from the Druidic calendar containing 13 signs, where Arachne is contained between Taurus and Gemini. In this tradition the Sun enters Arachne on May 16th and leaves it on June 13th. It is said to be the sign of the “Psychic”. If you would like to know more the little book “The Thirteenth Zodiac The Sign of Arachne” by James Vogh Mayflower Books 1979 is most fascinating.

However there is a second option on this thirteenth sign of the Zodiac, which is the one which I find quite fascinating. This is Ophiuchus The Serpent Bearer, and if you remember back a few years ago there was a flurry of media items about this “debate” as to whether we Astrologers (bunch of idiots which we are according to the Astronomers) have been wrong all these millennium using only the 12 signs on the band of the Ecliptic.

Well I found this all very interesting at the time, because Ophiuchus is a constellation whose stars cross over into the band of the ecliptic containing late Scorpio, all of Sagittarius, and early Capricorn - and low and behold at the time of said media fuss dear old Pluto was entering the part of Ophiuchus which is in Sagittarius.

And this from Russell Grant – a popular UK Astrologer from the 80/90’s, who doesn't think that the extra ones matter too much since they are already taken into account by astrologers;

'As for the extra zodiac signs I remember an up-market Sunday paper doing a big splash on “Thirteenth Zodiac Sign Discovered” back in the 80s - it was Arachne the Spider found between Taurus and Gemini. So you can imagine I was completely underwhelmed by the wheeling out of Ophiuchus - the Serpent Slayer as the 13th sign between Scorpio and Sagittarius as this sign has been around for years.

And if the accusatory Dr. Mitton was worth her salt she’d been telling us all about Cetus the Whale - another zodiac legend that has been suggested as part of the astrological zodiac - hey we’re already up to fifteen signs, anymore for anymore?

There are some astrologers who do use these extra signs but the majority stick to the traditional twelve as defined by the Tropical Zodiac.

Let us put this spurious criticism of Astrology by astronomers to bed once and for all and make it clear that western astrology is tied to the TROPICAL ZODIAC man-created to measure from 0 degrees Aries to 360 degrees Pisces and each sign is given 30 degrees.

And of course astrologers are aware that the constellations are different sizes, i.e. some are larger than others and overlap each other.’

So all these so-called discoveries are old hat, astrologers have taken them into account for centuries.

But needless to say I was waiting for this to happen because with Pluto moving into Sagittarius this week it was obvious something was going to be revealed to bring out the higher-minded qualities of this particular sign of Sagittarius which Ophiuchus, the healer, has long been associated with.

But the good news is that 26,000 years from now, everything will be back to as it was again, so this is a story that is set to run longer than Coronation Street!
