OMG - he's a one man band (nobody knows or understands... whistlingNEW2.gif )!!!
I just googled his name, so I'll save the search and read up on what he's about.

jawdropper2.gif too much, I read too much...

Just kidding lol.gif

Do you think Mr Hutchison chose to live in your particular area for any scientific or geographic reason to help with his study?

lol

I think his choice of location has a fair bit to do with government, I can't imagine that he appreciates too many intelligence agencies sniffing around. Why New Westminster exactly, I don't know -- he was originally from North Vancouver and moved to Germany to continue his research for a while, so maybe he came back home only to find that property prices had skyrocketed! Which would seem pretty logical as New West is about as close as you can get to Vancouver before you hit Vancouver prices.

Or who knows, maybe he just wanted to practice the Hutchison effect on the world's largest tin soldier! crazy.gif

roflsmiley.gif Giant tin soldier (wipes tears from eyes), that's er, um, does it make noises on a windy day? Perhaps your esteemed neighbour knows of this website and is taking up the challenge even as I type.

In our part of town we have a set of giant tuning forks sticking out of the ground in one of those council attempts to bring the cultural standard of the area up. They don't seem to have done much and not many people even know what they are supposed to be. Everyone has a giant something hey?

You're probably right about property prices being Mr Hutchison's reason for choosing an area just outside of Vancouver to buy when he came back from Germany.

I can't say that I've ever heard it making noises, but then again it's also right next to the skytrain route and one of the main drags, so any noise has to be quite loud to rise above the sound of traffic and skytrains.

Maybe I need to grow up a little, but I know that if I had the opportunity to use something like the Hutchison effect to turn that tin soldier into levitating gelly, I'd be on it in a heartbeat!

The tin soldier is relatively benign as far as weird giant things go -- THIS is the first thing you see coming into Laz's hometown.

They also have what must be the world's largest oxcart, which must have also been coated with the world's largest dose of fire-retardent because my dear man spent most of his childhood trying to burn it to the ground and never even managed to scorch it bouncefire.gif

Hey, now there's a great idea.

"We don't have enough culture in our city!"

"Ah, well the solution is simple! We'll erect a giant tuning fork to loom over the people and remind them of their cultural inadequacy!"

"Yeah, MENSA will be sure to relocate their international headquarters now! So, what's a tuning fork?"

Still, I'd take a giant tuning fork over the Selkirk catfish (or any of the other monstrosities you're likely to see driving through the Canadian prairies for that matter) any day of the week. That thing looks like it's been clubbed repeatedly over the head with the ugly stick and I find it hard to believe that someone, somewhere thought that not only would this be a good thing to put in a city, but that it's a good use of taxpayers' money as well. Never mind the conspiracies and scandals, all we have to do to regain control of our government is stop them from funnelling money into LSD-induced roadside attractions.

That catfish looks like its not very comfortable at all - and what is supposed to be keeping it's tail up in the air? And what has it got to do with Ronald MacDonald?

The giant tuning forks (a tuning fork is supposed to make sound by sympathetic resonance with anything which emits the same key note that the tuning fork was made to ring out - you strike it against a hard surface and it rings - used to tune pianos and such) are a bit stylised and look a bit like dental floss applicators but they are one of the most laughable attempts by council to drag this town out of the gutter. We used to have a water feature in the main street in between shops, but the single mothers were using it as a change station for their babies' bottoms nervous.gif and leaving the dirty nappies there, so its gone now. Sad, sad state of affairs we have here.

Down the highway a bit from here (100kms or so) is Goulburn, home of the giant sheep and the NSW Police Academy - accident? I think not... lol.gif

So, I have some growing up to do as well. But sometimes you've got to laugh.

I'm glad you noticed Ronald McDonald in the background there, because he's precisely the reason why that picture busts me up every time I see it.

Now that I think about it, I'd been playing the viola in a full orchestra for years before I'd ever seen a tuning fork. That considered, how your average joe is expected to know what it is or that it's supposed to make him more civilized... If you smack it with something, does it work? Maybe the nearest auditorium doesn't have a green room and the orchestras have to tune up outside?

On one hand it's laughable that they would erect a giant tuning fork with any kinds of hopes that it would raise the culture level...But on the other hand, at least they had some sort of reason for putting it up other than "I think we need something hideous, right at our city's entrance!"

Giant sheep right next to the police academy? Now you know I don't believe in coincidence winkNEW.gif
