As I recall, the Olmecs, from their art/sculptures, appeared to be a negroid race.

UC Riverside anthropologist on team confirming that the Olmec wrote it down back in 900 BC

UC Riverside Anthropologist Karl Taube helped confirm the earliest writing in the New World, carved into the flat surface of a stone block in a in a remote region in southern Veracruz, Mexico. The research will be published in the Sept. 15 issue of the journal Science.

Taube, a professor at UC Riverside for 18 years, was part of a team of researchers who traveled in the Spring to examine 62 hieroglyphic signs, 28 of them distinct elements. The team determined that they were created by the Olmec people no later than 900 BC, based on nearby art.

"This is extremely important because we never recognized this writing system, until this discovery," said Taube. "This is a whole new ball game when looking at the Olmec. We've known they have very elaborate art, and iconography, but this is the first strong indication that they had visually recorded speech."

The initial discovery was made by two archeologists from Mexico, Maria del Carmen Rodríguez and Ponciano Ortíz, but there was some debate about the significance of the find. Taube was one of the experts brought in to make a positive identification.

Unknown Writing System Uncovered On Ancient Olmec Tablet
Science aGoGo
15 Sept 06
QUOTE
Science magazine this week details the discovery of a stone block in Veracruz, Mexico, that contains a previously unknown system of writing; believed by archeologists to be the earliest in the Americas.

The slab - named the Cascajal block - dates to the early first millennium BCE and has features that indicate it comes from the Olmec civilization of Mesoamerica.

One of the archaeologists behind the discovery, Brown University's Stephen D. Houston, said that the block and its ancient script "link the Olmec civilization to literacy, document an unsuspected writing system, and reveal a new complexity to this civilization."

"It's a tantalizing discovery. I think it could be the beginning of a new era of focus on Olmec civilization," explained Houston. "It's telling us that these records probably exist and that many remain to be found. If we can decode their content, these earliest voices of Mesoamerican civilization will speak to us today."

Construction workers discovered the Cascajal block in a pile of debris in the community of Lomas de Tacamichapa in the late 1990s. Surrounding the piece were ceramic shards, clay figurine fragments, and broken artifacts of ground stone, which have helped the team date the block and its text to the San Lorenzo phase, ending about 900 BCE; approximately 400 years before writing was thought to have first appeared in the Western hemisphere.

The block weighs about 26 pounds and measures 36 cm x 21 cm x 13 cm. The text itself consists of 62 signs, some of which are repeated up to four times. There is no doubt that the piece is a written work, say the archaeologists. "As products of a writing system, the sequences would, by definition, reflect patterns of language, with the probable presence of syntax and language-dependent word order," they explain.

Interestingly, the surface containing the text appears to be concave and the team believes the block has been carved repeatedly and erased - an unprecedented discovery according to Houston, who added that several paired sequences of signs could even indicate poetic couplets.

Interesting that nobody is mentioning the Tamtoc mural which also contains symbols which may be writing announced in May of this year. It is Huastec and the Huastec split off from the Maya around 2200 BC. The oldest writing previously admitted for the May dates to around 300 BC from the San Bartolo site in Guatemala. A previous Olmec inscription was dated to 650 BC but looks nothing like this latest discovery. There is also a time lag here because the latest discovery was found in 99 and the Tamtoc site dates to almost the same time. Both Tamtoc and this Veracruz "Olmec" stone date to 900 BC. The Maya writing from San Bartolo was discovered in 2000 beneath a much later site site dating to the Maya Classic. Another group which split from the original Maya migration in 2200 was the Chicomuceltec of Chiapas which is now extinct. There's more which I have found discovered in Guerrero in the 1890's which is not mentioned at all in current mainstream discussions. The oldest writing known (or at least admitted) in the Americas comes from Oaxaca around 400 BC thought its origins are three times that old and it is not Olmec or Maya but the ancestors of the Zapotecs. There is a lot we are not being told as this limited hangout disclosure continues in fragments and discontinuities from the officialo gatekeepers of history. Sounds paranoid and audiovisual, but what would you expect from a fringe lunatic such as myself?
